For a new, or older water pumps what should you do when the unit doesn’t achieve design pressure despite the pump running at design speed? First step is to figure out the root cause of the problem. The below check list will help review and identify potential problems:
Not Achieving design pressure – probable causes and solutions:
Problem Cause | Solutions |
---|---|
Faulty gauge | Verify if gauge is correct |
Insufficient water supply | Clean supply line make sure tank is large enough for feed line |
Supply line filter is clogged | Clean filter and replace as needed |
Valves are worn | Inspect and replace worn valves |
Valve cones are sticking on seats | Dismantle valves and clean (check lifters if used) |
Booster pump not working | Check booster pump operation |
Supply line leaks (draws air) | Hydo test supply line for leaks, replace if needed |
Water supply line clogged | Check supply valve is open and water is flowing |
Valves aren’t working properly | Make sure valves were installed correctly |
Plunger Packing worn/blown out | Check packing and replace per instructions, if needed |
Bypass valve is not operating properly | Check bypass valve – replace worn parts |
Nozzles on discharge side are worn | Replace nozzles with proper orifice size |
Safety valve is leaking or not set properly | Check safety valve setting |
If any of the above are found to be the cause, please complete the check list as there may be multiple factors causing the system not to reach design pressure. If in doubt about any of the above, always contact a pump specialist for help.
Pump systems can be simple or very complex. However, if unfamiliar with high pressure systems, we always recommend contacting experts. Ignoring or misdiagnosing pump problems could lead to costly repairs, lost production and/or injury.
