URACA plunger pumps are engineered for continuous, high-duty-cycle service at pressures up to 3,000 bar. Proper operation and maintenance maximize the multi-decade service life many Chemac customers already experience.
Key technical tips:
- Inlet conditions and filtration — Maintain positive suction head and install filtration to at least 50–100 microns (finer for high-TDS or abrasive media). Contaminants are a leading cause of valve and packing wear.
- Packing and stuffing-box management — Do not overtighten glands. Over-tightening causes heat, accelerated plunger wear, and premature packing failure. Spring-loaded or timed-flush designs (especially on carbamate and ammonia pumps) greatly extend life. Ensure flush systems (condensate injection timed to the suction stroke) operate correctly. Checking stuffing box surface temperatures over packing areas to insure to insure temperatures do not exceed 60 deg C over the medium temperature.
- Plunger care — Inspect ceramic or hard-coated plungers regularly for scoring or coating damage. Proper alignment during reassembly is critical.
- Valve maintenance — Clean and inspect suction/discharge valves on a scheduled basis (often every few hundred to 1,000+ hours depending on service). Use original URACA valve components for proper seating and longevity.
- Lubrication and power end — Follow the recommended oil-change intervals for the crankcase. Monitor vibration and temperature. Conservative plunger speeds (a URACA design hallmark) reduce load cycles and extend component life.
- Hot or crystallizing media — Use heated liquid ends, proper flush, and shutdown procedures that prevent solidification in the packing area.
- Monitoring — Track packing leakage rates, discharge pressure pulsation, and power consumption. Rising power draw or increasing leakage often signals the need for service before a forced outage.
